The word “skookum” is from Chinook jargon, a Pacific Northwest trade language that emerged in the early 1800s. Now, it is a distinctly Alaskan word used to describe something or someone that is impressive and sturdy. A “skookum” trade item was top-notch. If someone calls you “a skookum”, then you have proven yourself resilient, brave, and reliable. If you’re looking for skookum gear…well, you’re in the right place.

Here is what makes Skookum Fleece skookum.

I start with Polartec® Fleece, the original Polar Fleece. Polartec® is made in the USA using recycled material and boasts an impressive warmth to weight ratio. Learn more from Polartec®.

I form striking combinations to make pieces that stand out. Inspiration comes from all over: a logo on a hoodie, a dish collection, an outside setting, sports teams, or simply what’s left over.

In high school, I saved up to purchase my own sewing machine. It was my first “big buy”. I use that very machine to stitch each mitten and blanket in small batches in Meridian, Idaho.

About Me

I’m Rylee, the mind and hands behind Skookum Fleece. I was born and raised in the snowiest town in the USA— Valdez, Alaska—where I grew to I love all things outside and all things making. At the intersection of those is my home business Skookum Fleece, where I hand make bold gear you can count on. Through activities like boating and cross-country skiing, I know and appreciate reliable gear. That’s what I strive to produce: those pieces that when it’s tucked in your bag, you know you’re prepared. While I do love it, sewing fleece is just a snippet of what I do. Before Skookum Fleece comes my faith and family. I am a wife and mother; holding down the home front while my husband plods through medical school. Our home and Skookum’s home is wherever the medical journey takes us. Currently, that is Idaho.
